Property Spotlight: An Eco-Resort for Earth Day

by jackvasconcelos

Amidst the season of renewal—and its blossoming gardens, tidied homes, and time outdoors with friends and family—the reasons to love and embrace our natural surroundings are abundant and evermore. Every April, as these experiences reach full bloom, we celebrate Earth Day, and with it we are reminded of how incredible the home we all share truly is.

Thus, before we embark on the latest edition of our property spotlight series, let’s look back at the history behind Earth Day.

The History of Earth Day

The first-ever Earth Day took place on April 22, 1970. Although spring may seem to be the natural choice for a holiday that celebrates our natural surroundings, the choice of date is actually all the more functional.

Denis Hayes and bi-partisan leaders in Congress galvanized a generation of college students to rectify decades of air and water pollution. Hayes scheduled Earth Day for April 22nd, falling directly between spring break and finals week, to increase attendance. And that it did.

The inaugural Earth Day in 1970 saw 20 million participants, 10% of America’s population at the time. Recognizing a potential to tap into all Americas (and soon, the world), Hayes would go on to turn Earth Day into what it now represents: a coalition of one billion people in over 190 countries with the same desire to shape a brighter future.

Earth Day, and its activists, are directly responsible for the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the passage of pivotal, revolutionary environmental laws such as the National Environmental Education Act, Occupational Safety and Health Act, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, and more.

The Property

Outdoor, al-fresco dining room in the Costa Rican jungle with picnic tables and a canopy roof

Our latest property spotlight takes you to the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica, where a unique listing showcases firsthand how sustainability, conservation, and community can inspire any home or business.

Tucked within the canopy of the rainforest, La Cotinga is an eco-retreat where nature lovers, yogis, and conservationists are inspired by the unique intersection of luxury and purpose-driven living.

The Build-Out of an Environmentally-Friendly Resort

Throughout its building process, every decision came down to this question: what is best for the surrounding community and environment? The entire hotel—from its building materials to its furniture—was crafted from bamboo and locally sourced wood. Expert local artisans guided La Continga’s buildout, and no room or area was left unconsidered. Gorgeous wooden sinks, carved on site and the waterfall-esque experience provided by the showers’ local pebble flooring are just two testaments to La Continga’s commitment to sustainable building and living.

Further, La Cotinga is surrounded by vast edible and medicinal gardens, including  Costa Rica’s most biodiverse garden, which features more than 180 different native species. As such, guests can indulge in once-in-a-lifetime dining experiences made from an impressive menu of locally-sourced ingredients.

A Legacy of Education, Sustainability, and Community

La Continga’s legacy is being written every single day. The hotel plays a major role in sustaining conservation initiatives that meaningfully and positively benefit its community. Be it the biological station for scientific research and conservation that calls La Cotinga home, its involvement in providing education worldwide about sustainability, or its close partnerships with local organizations that help preserve its ecosystem and support eco-tourism activities, La Continga is a catalyst in the environmental sphere.
